Brentwood Prep School is an academically selective HMC co-educational independent school with small class sizes and a happy, ambitious and supportive staff team. It is part of Brentwood School, a 3-18 HMC school of 1900 pupils, just 35 minutes from London Liverpool Street.

The Prep School became an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) candidate school in May 2024 and staff have begun an exciting journey of developing our curriculum and pedagogy. All new staff who join the school are supported through IB led training as well as in-house training and we enjoy collaborating across teams in order to deliver a truly world class education. Having a background in the PYP approach is not essential as we have a culture of learning together and recognise the different experiences staff bring from both the state and independent sectors. We welcome applications from all sectors of the community as we aspire to attract staff that match the social and cultural diversity of our student intake.

We are seeking to appoint a Head of Year – Key Stage 2 who straddles both the Academic and Pastoral realms, leading a team of Form Teachers in delivering excellent academic learning with their tutor groups and in providing proactive and responsive pastoral care. Heads of Year are themselves a Form Teacher in the Year Team they lead, ensuring they are immersed in the academic and pastoral programmes as well as being responsible for driving up standards in their team.

Each Key Stage 2 year has between 75 and 88 pupils split across 4 Form Classes. Knowing and valuing each of those pupils as an individual is at the core of everything we do.

We are a highly supportive school that values the contributions made by a motivated and intellectually curious staff. Staff across both the Prep and Senior School enjoy a bespoke collaborative approach to professional development. We believe in being a research engaged school, with those that facilitate our in-house research programme being trained by the Institute of Education. We support many of our staff in obtaining external accreditation across a range of fields and are engaged with a number of national and international organisations. There are a range of ways that we enhance our staff experience; free gym membership, benefits hub, free lunch, free tickets to school concerts and performance to name but a few. Brentwood School has its own pay scale that is significantly above the London Fringe Teacher Pay Scale. Teachers have the choice of being members of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme or the School’s own defined contribution scheme along with 14% higher salary.

Brentwood School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
