The Role

We are seeking to appoint an inspirational and high-achieving teacher to join the Mathematics Department of The King’s School, Gloucester. Willingness and ability to also deliver some Computer Science would be highly advantageous.

The successful candidate will have a genuine enthusiasm for Mathematics and be able to instil a love of the subject in their pupils. Through their excellent teaching, they should be able to generate and sustain a high degree of motivation and level of understanding in all pupils. The ability to teach Mathematics at A-Level, or a desire to learn, would be welcome, but not essential. We also welcome applications from those with experience of Functional Skills or Core Maths qualifications.

This post is suitable for anyone from a graduate to an experienced teacher, who is seeking to engage with a range of abilities in a School with well-behaved pupils and small class sizes, ranging from 6 pupils up to a maximum of 22.


The School

The King’s School is one of the dozen oldest schools in the country and has a proud heritage dating back to at least 1087, with a re-foundation in 1541. King’s is the Cathedral School in the city of Gloucester, whilst the surrounding county is home to many excellent grammar and state schools, as well as other independent schools. King’s is held in high regard amidst this competitive area; our academic, co-curricular and pastoral attainment is second to none. As a result, the last three ISI reports for King’s have all been classified as ‘excellent’ in every area. Local media brand SoGlos has awarded King’s the title of ‘Independent School of the Year’ or ‘Highly Commended’ in every one of the last five years – a feat unmatched by any other local independent school. Despite the multiple national-scale challenges of recent years, King’s has seen its pupil roll growing steadily and parental satisfaction scoring very highly indeed. With careful investment in the campus and facilities, as well as a continuous focus on improving teaching and learning and developing our outstanding pastoral care, King’s is now seen as a dynamic, forward-thinking and impressive place to study and to work.

It is an energetic, supportive and innovative department in which to work; as teachers, we hold our pupils and each other to high standards, and do our best to convey our passion to our learners. Every member of the Mathematics team strives to create a positive and happy learning environment in which all pupils feel valued and ready to explore, question, tackle and ultimately conquer mathematical challenges.

We aim to make Mathematics accessible, relevant and engaging, and to ensure that all pupils are appropriately supported and challenged. Our bespoke programme helps pupils cope with the mathematical demands they will face in other subjects, future study, employment and everyday life. It also introduces them to the beauty, diversity and intriguing evolution of mathematical ideas. Pupils develop their ability to analyse and solve problems using skills such as proportional reasoning, numerical fluency, logical thinking and statistical analysis. They establish themselves as confident independent learners through the development of self-reflection, resilience and resourcefulness.

Our teaching is highly interactive. Along with teacher-led discussion and independent practice, we incorporate group work, pupil-led board demonstrations, mini-whiteboards, games and competitions. Study programmes are flexible, allowing consolidation of key ideas, or extension work exploring unfamiliar concepts. Review and target-setting are built into each term’s programme. The Department is also closely involved in a number of cross-curricular projects and enrichment activities, in support of our desire to foster an appreciation of the power and beauty of mathematics, and the crucial input of other cultures to the development of mathematical ideas and techniques.


Main Duties

  • First-class, innovative teaching throughout the School in a manner appropriate to students' ages and abilities;
  • Assessing and recording students' progress in accordance with departmental and School policies;
  • Attending and contributing to departmental meetings;
  • Developing and sharing teaching and learning resources;
  • Monitoring the work and progress of pupils, including those with specific learning needs;
  • Maintaining professional skills through INSET and the School’s Continuing Professional Development programme;
  • Initiating and promoting links with Junior School where appropriate;
  • Promoting the awareness of relevant career opportunities and experiences for students;
  • Producing displays to create an enhanced learning environment;
  • Contributing to the extra-curricular life of the School through the Activities and Academic Enrichment Programme or other appropriate commitment;
  • Taking part in the pastoral life of the School as a Form Tutor or Cover Tutor;
  • Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact;
  • Any other tasks or responsibilities that may reasonably be assigned by the Headmaster.


Personal Profile

  • A degree related to Maths or experience in the field of Maths;
  • Experience of teaching and raising attainment at KS3-5;
  • Willingness and ability to deliver some Computer Science would be highly advantageous;
  • The ability to teach, or desire to learn to teach Mathematics at A-Level would be welcome;
  • Experience of Functional Skills or Core Maths would be welcome;
  • Enthusiasm and passion for the subject, the School and the pupils;
  • Dynamic, effective and up to date teaching strategies that engage all learners;
  • Initiative and resourcefulness, able to produce excellent lesson sequences;
  • Excellent written and oral communication, numerical and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to work under pressure, plan and prioritise own workload and remain professional at all times;
  • Ability to deliver high standards, accuracy and attention to detail, meeting all deadlines;
  • Willingness to undertake further professional development.

The King's School, Gloucester has a rich academic tradition as one of the seven famous Cathedral Schools established by Henry VIII in 1541.
