Interview date: 25th February

The Role

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and dynamic individual to teach PE and Games within a highly successful Sports Department. Experience of coaching at least two of our major sports to a high standard would be highly advantageous (ideally netball, rugby and/or cricket) and you must be comfortable delivering academic PE (GCSE, BTEC and A-Level). For the right candidate, there is opportunity to take on departmental leadership roles.

The position offers an opportunity to join a motivated and committed team of Physical Education teachers, and a number of other colleagues throughout the School with various areas of expertise. We are seeking someone who can actively contribute to the continuing development of the subject, within both mixed and single sex classes. A full programme of Saturday and midweek fixtures is undertaken; a commitment to the extra-curricular life of the School will be essential.

The School

The King’s School is one of the dozen oldest schools in the country and has a proud heritage dating back to at least 1087, with a re-foundation in 1541. King’s is the Cathedral School in the city of Gloucester, whilst the surrounding county is home to many excellent grammar and state schools, as well as other independent schools. King’s is held in high regard amidst this competitive area; our academic, co-curricular and pastoral attainment is second to none. As a result, the last three ISI reports for King’s have all been classified as ‘excellent’ in every area. Local media brand SoGlos has awarded King’s the title of ‘Independent School of the Year’ or ‘Highly Commended’ in every one of the last five years – a feat unmatched by any other local independent school. Despite the multiple national-scale challenges of recent years, King’s has seen its pupil roll growing steadily and parental satisfaction scoring very highly indeed. With careful investment in the campus and facilities, as well as a continuous focus on improving teaching and learning and developing our outstanding pastoral care, King’s is now seen as a dynamic, forward-thinking and impressive place to study and to work.

The Department

Physical Education, delivered by a committed team of specialists, is one of the cornerstones of The King’s School in its mission to develop well-rounded and engaging young adults. Pupils are taught in mixed classes across the 8 – 18 age range by specialist staff; the department comprises eight full-time and four part-time members, who are dedicated to both the curricular and extra-curricular needs of the pupils. The School has a strong record of pupils gaining representative honours across a wide range of sports; we are proud of the students' achievements and believe strongly that they are well supported by highly motivated and qualified coaches. Although we are very proud of our elite sportsmen and women, we are also dedicated to supporting every pupil in the pursuit of achieving their potential.

PE at King’s has enjoyed plenty of success so far this year; our 1st XV Rugby team have progressed through a series of highly competitive fixtures to reach the semi-finals of the National Vase, to be played in March; the U12 and U13 Girls’ Hockey squads won their respective county tournaments to reach regional finals; several male and female cricketers have been awarded county honours. We are also proud to continue our partnership with the Birmingham Panthers Super League netball franchise; as an U18 Emerging Talent Program, King’s supports and nurtures local, talented athletes, and the partnership offers regular opportunities for athletes to play against local performance clubs and other super league franchises – several King’s students have been selected for the Panthers training squad as a result.

Timetable, Induction and Training

The School operates a ten-day timetable cycle, consisting of 60 periods. Full-time members of staff teach 48 periods per cycle. Early Career Teachers (ECTs) receive a reduced timetable in their first two years for training and induction. Applicants without formal teaching qualifications will be considered for this position. The King’s School has a strong record of training and developing teachers in situ, and there are opportunities for further development at every level.

Now, it is a successful co-educational independent day school with around 750 pupils, aged three to eighteen, offering academic excellence, a celebrated range of extra-curricular activities and outstanding pastoral care.

King's is held in very high esteem amongst the local and wider community, winning Gloucestershire Independent School of the Year in 2020 and 2021, and being Highly Commended in 2022, 2023 and 2024. Following the 2022 ISI Inspection, King's was proud to be declared 'excellent in all areas'.

With small classes and inspiring teachers, The King's School offers a vibrant culture of endeavour and scholarship in the historic setting of Gloucester Cathedral. As a result, the school has a special sense of identity which encourages a moral framework and a powerful feeling of community.

The King's School aims to stimulate all pupils to the greatest possible academic, creative and extra-curricular achievement by encouraging the exploration of a wide range of cultural, intellectual and sporting activities. We offer a unique 'Keystones' approach which identifies and develops individual talents and personal qualities.

Aims and Aspirations

The life of the School at all levels is underpinned by our long term aims and aspirations, which represent the key principles on which King's is based.

  • The King's School is a co-educational Independent School offering a distinctive education that is firmly based on Christian principles. We welcome into our community boys and girls of all religious faiths and cultures to promote the qualities of tolerance, understanding, compassion and commitment and to encourage young people to think of others, both within and beyond the community of which they are members.
  • King's is by choice a medium-sized school with small classes from age 3 to 18, divided into two schools, Junior (ages 3 – 11) and Senior (ages 11 – 18). Since our Foundation in 1541 as a Cathedral School, we have educated the Choristers of Gloucester Cathedral; a role which is central to our ethos.
  • To the best of our ability and resources, the School aims to educate young people from a variety of backgrounds, enhancing this capability by the further development of scholarships and bursaries.
  • Through the expertise and dedication of our staff, through our facilities, close relationships with the Cathedral, excellent pastoral care and general ethos, we seek to stimulate all pupils to the greatest possible academic, creative and extra-curricular achievement by encouraging the exploration of a wide range of cultural, intellectual and sporting activities.
  • Pupils are encouraged to think for themselves and to appreciate the importance of self-discipline. All pupils are treated as individuals, though at the same time they are encouraged to contribute to group work, teamwork and the community as a whole.
  • The School is committed to a broad, balanced and well-knit curriculum which is relevant to the needs of its pupils. The curriculum offers scope for individual specialisation where appropriate and is constantly reviewed in the light of developments within the School, nationally and internationally. Innovation is encouraged.
  • Whether pupils are of high or average academic ability, the School aims to enable them to develop fully as individuals, to prepare them for responsible adult life and to encourage qualities of initiative and leadership.
  • Celebrating achievement is seen as a valued part of the School's success. Pupils' performances in academic life, sport, activities and the performing arts are all recognised in assemblies, in newsletters, on Speech Day, at Junior School Prizegiving and in many other ways.
