Barnard Castle School

Barnard Castle School is a happy,thriving HMC day and boarding school for boys and girls aged between 4 and 18. Boarding, recently rated as excellent in an inspection, is as popular as ever and the school continues to refurbish and upgrade its boarding houses so that the facilities are second to none. Recent upgrades to the school have included a new fitness suite, dance studio and Sixth Form Centre. The area is well served by Durham Tees Valley, Newcastle and Leeds Bradford Airports and by Darlington railway station from which London and Edinburgh may be reached in little over two hours.

There are 550 pupils in the Senior School, of whom 200 are boarders and enjoy a full boarding programme which was rated as "Excellent" by ISI in 2011. The School is situated in its own extensive grounds on the outskirts of an historic market town, recently noted as being the safest in England, in an area of outstanding beauty. The School is well resourced and enjoys an enviable reputation for its pupils' achievements on a broad variety of fronts. We believe that all our children have something to offer, and are driven by a desire to find areas where each of them can excel. Every term we offer an extensive programme of over 100 extra-curricular activities to which all members of the Common Room contribute. The School was inspected bu ISI in April 2011. The inspectors found 8 areas "excellent" and rated three "good". They described Barnard Castle as " A well managed and well-resourced school which is professional and forward looking in outlook and which has high aims for all pupils, but which still encapsulates the traditionally unpretentious ethos of this immensely busy, friendly and happy boarding and day school".
