Teacher of Classics (part-time - 1 year post)
- Organisation: City of London School
- Location: East London
- Tenure: Part-time
- Closing Date: Monday 27 April 2026
We are currently seeking to fill the position of Teacher of Classics (part-time - 1 year post) at City of London School.
An outstanding teacher of Classics is required for September 2026. The School has a long-standing record of high academic achievement (93.4% of A-level entries gained A* to B grades in 2025, 63% Grade 9 at GCSE, 86% 9/8 and 96% 9-7 GCSE in 2025). There is also much happening in terms of co-curricular activities, and all staff are expected to be fully involved in School life.
Classics is a flourishing department with five full time teachers and one part-time who teach across the age ranges, seeking to instil an enthusiasm and love for classics in all pupils. Old Grammar (Y6) study a bespoke Classics course. Latin is compulsory in First and Second Form (Y7 & Y8) and it is a popular option in Third Form with large numbers opting for Latin, Latin/Greek and Classical Civilisation. Y7 Y9 follow Suburani, and we offer Latin, Latin/Greek and Classical Civilisation at GCSE and A Level. Classics is an extremely popular choice in the Sixth From and pupils regularly go on to high tariff universities. The post could involve teaching from Year 6 through to Year 13. There is a rich co-curricular programme (we are very proud of the model of Circus Minimus), an impressive supra-curricular programme (Legenda is the annual Classics magazine with contributions from pupils), and in recent years there have been trips to the British Museum, Oxford, Bath, Greece and Italy.
We aspire to attract a staff that matches the social and cultural diversity of the CLS community. We welcome applications from anyone with the relevant skills and abilities, and particularly from those who may not previously have thought of applying to a school such as ours. We use CV Minder to anonymise applications.
CLS was named by the Sunday Times as London Independent Secondary School of the Year 2020, and occupies fine, modern buildings near St. Pauls Cathedral overlooking the Thames, opposite the Tate Modern. There are impressive off-site sports facilities in southeast London.
CLS Teaching Pay Scale £40,480 £65,150 (plus two progression points to £67,270 and £69,450) 2025 - 2026. The post would be suitable for an ECT (we provide statutory induction) or a colleague with more experience.
City of London School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
Further information about the School and a copy of the most recent ISI Inspection report are available on our website, alongside further information about the broader benefits of working at CLS.
Closing date: 9am 27 April 2026.
Interviews will be held on 6 May 2026.
