The Headmaster and CEO of Eltham College Family of Schools is seeking to appoint an an inspirational and highly professional to Teacher of Politics to contribute to the development of the Politics department at Eltham College. The successful candidate will be a graduate of Politics or a related subject, will be able to demonstrate a sound understanding of the subject, will have high academic standards and will be able to enthuse pupils of all ages. The ability to teach history at GCSE and A Level will be an advantage.

Experience in a similarly high-performing academic environment would be advantageous. A commitment to excellent pastoral care, enriching co-curricular activities and outreach activities is also expected.

The Politics Department

The Politics Department at Eltham College aims to instil a genuine passion for in the subject in its students to ensure a life-long interest in Politics. Lessons are designed to be thought-provoking and responsive to student needs. We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic individual who shares these values. The department has a strong track record of inspiring and supporting students who wish to go on to study Politics and related courses at university, with a number going on to Russell Group universities in recent years. There is an active, student-led Pol-Econ Society that meets on a weekly basis and gives students the chance to explore the subject beyond the confines of the curriculum. The department also runs regular trips to Parliament and Washington DC to complement the taught syllabus.

The Politics Department is a friendly department, currently comprising of 3 teachers, all of whom are knowledgeable subject specialists, committed to improving their pedagogical practice, and sharing ideas. The subject is well resourced with modern textbooks and subscriptions to Politics Review and Pre-chewed Politics. Our students also benefit from extensive print and e-resource collections in the Mervyn Peake Library.

We currently follow the Edexcel A Level specification and study US Government and Politics alongside compulsory UK Government and Politics. The department currently teaches Nationalism as its optional non-core ideology. The subject is one of the more popular new subjects available to Sixth Formers and maintains a healthy uptake. Exam results are consistently good with 2025 results at 100% A*/A.

Eltham College is a highly successful independent day school in south-east London, educating boys and girls aged 7 to 18 across both Junior and Senior Schools. The College has grown considerably over recent years: there are now over 800 students in the Senior School and around 260 pupils in the Junior School and places are heavily oversubscribed. Since 2020, girls have been able to join Years 3 and 7, mirroring the Sixth Form which has been coeducational for over 45 years. The school places an equal emphasis on academic, pastoral and co-curricular excellence and has an outstanding reputation in all three areas as well as for the friendly, unpretentious nature of daily life.
