Emanuel School

Emanuel is a co-educational independent day school, situated in 14 acres in Wandsworth just off the South Circular on Battersea Rise, a 5 to 10 minute walk from Clapham Junction. The school was founded in Westminster in 1594 by Lady Dacre and currently has 762 pupils from ages 10 to 18.

We believe that a good education is about the whole pupil and we offer a broad curriculum with special attention given to art, drama, sport and music. We offer as many scholarships in these areas as we do for academic success. We also offer bursaries for high-achieving candidates. Emanuel has a lively sixth form for students studying A levels and the vast majority of our pupils gain a place at the university or college of their first choice. Emanuel is committed to • promoting independent thought and a life-long curiosity for learning; • the pursuit of academic excellence; • providing a broad-based education enabling all pupils to discover their strengths, develop their individual talents and prepare for higher education and adult life; • providing supportive pastoral care that nurtures health and well-being, emotional maturity and spiritual richness; • engendering respect, tolerance and understanding of the importance of caring for others and the environment. We are looking for interesting and interested children, who are doers and who will take up the many opportunities we have to offer. The school thrives on the buzz of the children themselves and our job is to provide the facilities, guidance and opportunities for them to take up the challenge. Emanuel is an academic school with rising academic results. However we are not aiming to be an academic hothouse. We have a relatively low minimum academic entrance exam hurdle at 55%, allowing us to admit children with talents in other areas and to operate a sibling policy. This makes it particularly accessible to parents as well as giving the school a unique family feel. However the school does expect most children to be achieving a much higher mark than 55%. We are very keen to consider bursary and scholarship applications from high-achieving candidates. We follow a Christian ethos but have children of all religions. It is a very friendly and down to earth school, the result of excellent pastoral care which lies at the heart of our educational philosophy. The pastoral care was particularly praised in the last inspection. Without good pastoral care we believe that all the other aspects of the school would not be able to achieve as highly as they do. In preparing the children for later life, we aim to encourage them to appreciate that there are many different opinions in the big wide world that need to be analysed, evaluated and respected. We want them to know just how capable they are, to want to take on the challenges that await them and to give something back. We do this by giving them encouragement and direction to learn independently, to appreciate and discuss the differing points of view within the school and to question what they hear and learn. They are also expected to develop whatever talent they have. The atmosphere of friendly tolerance and the formal programmes that the school provides help the pupils to achieve this. Finally do visit the school and speak to the children there to see for yourselves. We have Open Days on Tuesday, 29th April, 2014 from 2.30 to 4.30 and Saturday, 13th September, 2014 from 9.30 to 12.30. There is no need to book for these. We also hold Open Mornings throughout the year (please call the school to book in for these. Or simply ring up and we can sort out a visit.
