Hybrid Duty Manager & Recreation Assistant / Lifeguard

Winchester College is seeking a dynamic, safety-focused individual for the full-time role of Hybrid Duty Manager, Recreation Assistant & Lifeguard (DM RA/LG), starting as soon as possible. This dual role splits time between operational management and frontline safety/supervision, reporting to the Sports General Centre General Manager. The DM RA/LG must ensure all users have a fun, safe, and positive experience, upholding the highest standards of safety and safeguarding across all sports facilities (pool, fitness suite, all-weather pitch).
The Role
This is a dual role, with 50% of the time dedicated to Duty Management and 50% to Recreation Assistant/Lifeguard duties.
Your key responsibilities include:
Duty Management & Team Leadership (50%)
- Operational Oversight: Supervise the daily operation of the facilities and delivery of activities, ensuring staff awareness of setup/takedown requirements.
- Team Supervision: Assist in the supervision and development of Recreation Assistants/Lifeguards (RALs), monitoring workload, and ensuring adherence to high standards, uniform, and staff etiquette.
- Financial Control: Maintain financial control, ensuring all facility users have paid, and assist RALs in the daily income takings reconciliation.
- Software Management: Assist the Deputy Manager with implementing and managing software (TechnoGym and Gladstone), training staff and customers on its usage.
- Pool Plant: Attend mandatory Pool Plant Operators course (training provided) to complete regular water testing, chemical dosing, and essential pool maintenance.
Lifeguard & Recreation Assistant Duties (50%)
- Safety & Compliance: Act as a qualified lifeguard, ensuring the safety of the pool and all users. Strictly adhere to Normal Operating Procedures (NOPs) and Emergency Action Plans (EAPs).
- Emergency Response: Provide first aid, rescue swimmers, and administer CPR/artificial respiration if necessary (qualification dependent). Complete accurate accident, incident, and near-miss reporting.
- Customer Service: Deliver high standards of customer service, responding professionally to all enquiries and concerns.
- Gym Instruction: Instruct gym users on the correct techniques and safe use of equipment, and plan/run weekly fitness classes (qualification dependent). Initiate and coordinate gym challenges and workshops.
- Facility Maintenance: Assist with the set-up and take-down of sports apparatus and maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene across the centre.
- Training: Attend all mandatory training, including monthly 2-hour lifeguard pool training, to maintain competency and compliance.
About You
We are seeking a proactive leader and coach with strong safety knowledge and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Lifeguard: Hold a current National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ). Must maintain an acceptable level of fitness for training and time trial swims.
- Experience: Significant experience in either/both a school and commercial customer-facing environment. Experience working within a sports environment and supervising a team.
- Qualifications: A relevant degree or industry-recognised qualification.
- Knowledge: Strong Health and Safety and safeguarding knowledge.
- Attributes: A leader and coach committed to staff development. Able to thrive in complex and fluid situations, maintaining a friendly, calm, and approachable manner.
Desirable Qualifications
- Pool Plant Operators Certificate.
- Level 2 or equivalent fitness industry qualification.
- Fitness Class Instructors Qualifications.
- First Aid Certificate.
- Good understanding of leisure industry software.
- Computer literate. (Driving licence also an advantage, but not essential).
What We Offer
- Start Date: Flexible start date, with preference for commencement as soon as possible.
- Hours of Work: Full-time, 40 hours per week. Expectation to work a mixture of morning, evening, and weekend shifts, covering opening hours (shifts are under review and subject to change):
- Monday to Friday: Morning Shifts 06:45 – 14:45 / Evening Shift 14:15 – 22:15
- Weekends: Morning Shift 8:00 – 16:00 / Evening Shift 13:15 – 21:15
- Salary: Full-time salary is £28,496.00 (gross) per annum, paid monthly.
