Governor
- Organisation: Kingston Grammar School
- Location: Surrey
- Tenure: Part-time
- Closing Date: Thursday 30 April 2026
Proudly co-educational and independent, Kingston Grammar School is a leading 11-18 day school where values are lived, futures are forged and students are empowered to live out our motto of Work Well & Be Happy.
The Governing Body is seeking to recruit two new Governors who will also serve as Trustees and Directors of the charitable company. This is a significant strategic role, helping to shape the School’s development and ensure strong governance, oversight and support.
Description: There are currently 13 serving governors with a range of skills and expertise including Finance, Law, Education, Business and HR. Our governors include a balance of parents of current and former students, former students and others who are entirely independent of the School.
We are looking specifically for two new governors with relevant skills and experience in:
•Child or Educational Psychology / Child Mental Health and Welfare
•Higher Education (University Level) Admissions
Commitment: Governors are expected to:
- attend all Governing Body meetings in person (four per year, mostly weekday evenings, plus one full-day INSET in June)
- serve on at least one committee and attend as many committee meetings as possible (generally one per term for each committee on Teams, usually at 5 pm)
- set aside sufficient time to read papers and prepare for meetings
- visit the School periodically during the day for link visits
- complete annual mandatory safeguarding training and other training as required
- attend other School events where possible.
This is an unpaid voluntary role although reasonable expenses may be claimed.
Interested? If you are interested in applying, please contact Dinah Coomes, Clerk to Governors - DCoomes@kgs.org.uk - and we can arrange an informal conversation with the Vice Chair of Governors to discuss this opportunity further.
We can also then guide you through the formal application process, if you wish to proceed. This typically includes submitting a CV and covering letter, an interview with the Nominations & Governance Committee and an informal meeting with the Head and Chair of Governors before formal appointment by the Governing Body.
Our commitment to Safeguarding: In line with Keeping Children Safe in Education, an online search of publicly available information will be carried out prior to interview to identify any matters relevant to your suitability to work with children and to serve as a Governor. All appointed Governors are required to undergo an enhanced DBS check and a Section 128 check, as well as any other child protection screening appropriate to the post. Any matters identified will be considered in context and will not automatically prevent appointment.
