We are excited to be recruiting for an experienced Teacher of Design Technology to join our thriving and highly successful DT Department. The candidate appointed will have impressive subject knowledge and a desire to be part of a team of committed professionals within the DT Department and the School.

About the department and role:

The department occupies an impressive, purpose-built facility which was opened in 2012 and is still a flagship building of the school. It comprises two large multi-material workshops, a machine area, prep room, full ICT suite and electronics lab. There are currently three full-time members of teaching staff in the department and one technician.

Design and Technology: Product Design are options at GCSE and A level within the school. At both levels, pupils currently specialise in woods, metals and polymers to realise their designs. The subject is compulsory in years 7 and 8. It is optional in year 9, however, it is typically chosen by the majority of the year group. The Department is actively involved in the Year 9 STEM Curriculum lessons under the FutureTech umbrella and actively supports a variety of extra-curricular initiatives within the School and with outside agencies. These include STEM clubs, providing students with engineering and problem-solving challenges. The department regularly competes in external competitions for example Surrey Satro and Samsung Solve for Tomorrow.

This role is for a maternity cover and will report to the SLT link member for DT.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach Design Technology to all year groups throughout the school.
  • Work cooperatively within the Department Team.
  • Be familiar with the aims and objectives of the Department as outlined in the departmental handbook.
  • Assist with the development of schemes of work and assessment materials.
  • Keep records of marks achieved in preps and tests by pupils you taught.
  • Attend suitable INSET as required under the guidance of the SLT link member for DT.
  • Promote Design Technology as an option at GCSE and A Level.
  • Keep abreast with developments in Design Technology through relevant literature.
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact.
  • Carry out any other duties required by the Headmaster and commensurate with the role.
  • All members of the academic staff are involved in the School's tutorial and pastoral systems and are expected to be involved in the Activities Curriculum provided to the pupils.
