Brighton College Prep Handcross is seeking to appoint a Deputy Head of Science to start in September 2026.
Job Purpose
Leadership and Department Development
Support the Head of Science in providing clear, caring and effective leadership across the department.
Act as a positive role model for pupils and colleagues, upholding the highest standards of professionalism.
Contribute to the strategic development of Science teaching and learning, including the introduction of innovative and engaging approaches.
Assist in the planning, implementation and review of schemes of work for Years 3 to 8. Help coordinate departmental resources and work within agreed budgets in liaison with the Head of Science, Bursar and Headmaster.
Lead departmental meetings in the absence of the Head of Science. Celebrate pupils' achievements through high-quality displays and exhibitions within the department and across the school.
Teaching and Learning
Teach Science across the Prep School as required. Plan and deliver well-structured, engaging lessons that promote progression, challenge and enjoyment of Science.
Set appropriate and challenging tasks for individuals, groups and whole classes, including homework. Adapt teaching to meet the needs of all pupils, including those who are underachieving and those who are very able. Use assessment effectively to inform planning and support pupil progress.
Assessment and Reporting Assess, record and monitor pupils' progress and attainment accurately and consistently. Use assessment information to support future learning and departmental development.
Report clearly and constructively to parents and contribute to parent consultation evenings.
Pastoral Care and Safeguarding
Be responsible for the pastoral care of a Tutor group.
Support the well-being, behaviour and personal development of all pupils.
Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people in line with school policies.
Establish a safe, supportive learning environment where pupils feel secure and confident.
Maintain appropriate professional relationships and boundaries with pupils. Wider School Life Run a weekly Science Club for pupils in Years 3 to 6.
Contribute actively to the school’s extra-curricular programme, including trips and residential visits.
Attend and support whole-school events, assemblies, parents' evenings, Open Days and INSET days as required.
The ability and willingness to coach sport is not essential but it would be desirable. Be willing to cover for absent colleagues when necessary.
Professional Responsibilities
Work collaboratively and supportively with colleagues within the department and across the school.
Engage in ongoing professional development and keep up to date with developments in Science education.
Share expertise and good practice with colleagues where appropriate. Comply with all school policies and contribute positively to the ethos and life of the school.
