The Mathematics Department is one of the most successful departments in the School, with very good results achieved at all levels. It consists of 16 Masters.
There are approximately 170 boys in a year group and usually some 100 boys study Mathematics in each year of the Sixth Form. The department currently prepares boys for examinations set by Pearson. In 2024, 34% of A-level Mathematics grades were at A*, with 79% at A*-A. Three divisions (sets) of boys studied Further Mathematics, with 81% achieving A*-A. In the same year, 53% of IGCSE results were at grade 9, with 79% at grades 9-8. Almost all in the top two divisions at IGCSE also take the Additional Mathematics qualification, with many achieving the highest possible grade.
The Mathematics Department has a long tradition of excellence in national Mathematics competitions. Each year large numbers of boys participate in the UKMT Mathematics Challenges, with many going on to take the Olympiad papers. The department also runs an inter-house Mathematics competition as well as a competition for individual boys. Harrovians enter both the Junior and Senior Mathematics Team Challenges; they have won three national titles since 2011. There is also an active Mathematics Society, which hosts weekly talks on different Mathematical themes.
The Role:
The successful applicant will teacher Mathematics at all levels throughout the school. They will be expected to make an enthusiastic contribution to the work of the department and further the high profile of the department among Harrovians. They will contribute to the Super-Curriculum, which includes Electives, lectures and other academic extension, attend Chapel regularly and Speech Room (assembly) one weekly. They will also be a tutor in a House, supporting the House Master in the pastoral care of a group of boys, teacher PSHEE to a tutor group and contribute to extra-curricular activities, which are an important part of boarding-school life.
Support and training to achieve Qualified Teacher Status can be offered if required. We occasionally appoint Masters with outstanding qualities and a good degree who do not have a formal teaching qualification.
Harrow has its own salary scale and many other benefits.
Closing date: 9am, Monday 7 October 2024
The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The successful applicant must be willing to undergo child protection screening including checks with any past employer and the DBS.
Equality, diversity and inclusion are values that are important to us at Harrow. We believe in diversity of thought and actively welcome anyone regardless of their background to bring their valuable and relevant skills to our community.
