The postholder will lead on design and realisation of lighting for productions and events in the Ryan Theatre and other performance spaces.

THEATRE TECHNICIAN (Lighting Bias)

Full time, all year round, 40 hours per week

with flexibility to work evenings and occasional weekends

The role. Harrow School’s Drama and Theatre department stages an ambitious and diverse range of productions and events across the year. Based in the Ryan Theatre, the theatre production team comprises a core group of technical, creative and administrative staff, working flexibly and supportively to deliver the programme, and liaising with colleagues and students across the organization as well as externally. Harrow has a national reputation for its drama programme, and many former pupils have pursued careers in the theatre and performance industries. We are now seeking a Theatre Technician to join this team. The postholder will lead on design and realisation of lighting for productions and events in the Ryan Theatre and other performance spaces. You will also work broadly to support different elements of the production process, with appropriate guidance provided as required.

The skills. The role will provide the opportunity for you to develop your experience and skillset within a busy, creative and supportive environment. Enthusiasm for working with young people is essential, as is working in a collaborative environment with a rapid turnover of work. More information about the scope and achievements of the Drama and Theatre Department can be found at: harrowschool.org.uk/learning-2/arts-and-culture/drama. If you would like to arrange an informal conversation about the role, you are welcome to be in contact with Gaynor Jervis, Director of Drama (GLJ@harowschool.org.uk).

The benefits. Benefits include free lunches, free parking, automatic enrolment in the School’s pension scheme and use of the School’s sports facilities such as the swimming pool and gym. Subsidised membership of the tennis, golf, angling and social clubs is also available.

The site. Harrow School is situated in Harrow on the Hill in north-west London and is one of the best-known schools in the world. Around 835 boys aged 13 to 18 study at Harrow and live in the School’s 12 boarding Houses. Employees particularly value the School’s beautiful, historic green estate, the positive working environment, and good relationships with their colleagues.

Applications will be processed as they are received and interviews may take place before the closing date, so early application is recommended.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are values that are important to us at Harrow. We believe in diversity of thought and actively welcome everyone regardless of their background to bring their valuable and relevant skills to our community.

Harrow School is committed to promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to adhere to and ensure compliance with the School’s Safeguarding and Child Protection policies and procedures at all times.

In the event of a successful application, candidates will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including, but not limited to, reference checks with past employers, an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (including Children’s Barred List information) and prohibition checks. No member of staff will be able to start until these checks are complete and this process takes, on average, a month. Please plan accordingly.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore all convictions and cautions, reprimands and final warnings (including those which would normally be considered as “spent” under the Act) must be declared, subject to the DBS filtering rules. It is a criminal offence for any person who is barred from working with children to attempt to apply for a position at the Harrow School. Please refer to the School's Recruitment, Selection and Disclosure Policy for more details.
