We are delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for an inspiring and innovative Head of Computer Science to lead, develop and shape a thriving, future‑focused department

The Computer Science Department

The Computer Science department is a vibrant and innovative space where students engage hands‑on with the latest developments in technology. It is the department’s aim to equip all pupils with practical, employable skills that broaden their opportunities when they leave the College.

In Year 9, pupils build strong foundations in programming by developing applications in a high‑level programming language. Theory is taught dynamically through practical examples, helping students grasp essential concepts such as algorithms, flowcharts, binary and hexadecimal conversions.

This prepares students for GCSE, where they deepen their understanding of programming techniques—including selection, iteration and sub‑programs—alongside algorithm design using flowcharts and pseudocode.

At A‑level, Computer Science encourages exploration of problem solving, systems analysis, software design, implementation, testing and documentation. Students also extend their skills through independent projects such as game development, website creation and smartphone app programming.

Hurst students regularly progress to top universities to read Computer Science, including Cambridge, St Andrews and Loughborough.
