We are delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for an outstanding Teacher of English to join our collaborative and innovative department. This role would suit an experienced teacher or talented and ambitious ECT. If you are a recent English graduate looking to begin a career in teaching we'd also be keen to speak with you.
Working at Hurst
Hurst is one of Sussex’s leading independent schools, offering a vibrant and supportive environment for both pupils and staff. With almost 1,400 pupils across our Senior and Prep Schools, we combine academic excellence with a strong sense of community.
As a member of our team, you’ll enjoy working in a stunning countryside setting while remaining well-connected. We’re just 20 minutes from the city and beaches of Brighton & Hove, and London is under an hour away by train. Free on-site parking is available to all staff.
We also offer an extensive range of staff benefits, including free lunches during term time, use of our exceptional sports facilities, access to wellbeing initiatives, and opportunities for professional development.
The English Department
We are a collaborative, supportive and ambitious department housed in a suite of rooms in a modern, purpose-built classroom block. The departmental office functions as a central resource base and meeting point for all the English staff. We pride ourselves on delivering rigorous and engaging lessons, and believe that pupil enjoyment of the subject leads to excellent results.
A Level English Literature is a popular option at the College and there are at least two sets in each year group. In the Upper and Lower Sixth, students will follow the Edexcel A Level course. There are eleven one-hour periods per fortnight and ‘A’ level classes are shared between two teachers.
For KS4, pupils are placed in sets according to ability; there are ten sets with eight lessons per fortnight. At the end of Year 11, pupils sit the Edexcel International GCSEs in both English Literature and English Language.
In Year 9, the starting point for the Senior School, pupils are set according to ability. This year is treated as an IGCSE foundation course, with teaching focused on building the skills necessary for the International GCSE whilst aiming to instil a love of the subject; pupils study a wide range of literature chosen by us to mirror the IGCSE content, from Agatha Christie to Arthur Miller to poetry ranging from Milton to Duffy to Osundare.
Who We're Looking For:
The successful candidate will have experience of teaching at both GCSE and A Level with a proven track record of success. They will be proactive, organised and place the needs of the young people at the forefront of everything they do.
