The Hall School seeks an inspiring Cello Teacher to teach Years 1–8, drive a vibrant string programme, prepare pupils for exams and scholarships, and lead ensembles. 1–2 days weekly plus ensemble coaching.

The Hall School is seeking an inspiring and committed Cello Teacher to join our thriving and inclusive Music Department at this leading boys’ preparatory school. We are looking for a skilled practitioner with the ability to teach pupils from Year 1 to Year 8, working across a wide range of abilities-from complete beginners through to advanced players preparing for music scholarships and specialist school entry.

The successful candidate will contribute to a vibrant and ambitious string programme, supporting pupils in both individual progression and ensemble performance. You will play a key role in maintaining the school’s strong tradition of musical excellence through:

  • Individual cello tuition (self-employed Visiting Music Teacher basis)
  • Preparing pupils for ABRSM examinations
  • Coaching pupils for concert performances and school events
  • Supporting and developing pupils aiming for music scholarships
  • Maintaining strong, professional communication with parents

Teaching Arrangements (Self-Employed)

  • Lessons are contracted directly with parents
  • Teachers currently charge £54 per hour, with a planned increase from September 2026.
  • Teaching allocation is currently 1–2 days per week, depending on pupil sign-ups each September

Employed Chamber & Ensemble Work

  • In addition to individual teaching, the role includes 2 hours 25 minutes of employed work, which involves:
  • Coaching string chamber ensembles
  • Supporting school string groups and orchestras
  • Assisting with rehearsals and ensemble preparation across the department

This employed element comes with staff benefits, and the rate from September 2026 is £58.45.

Availability

Due to ensemble scheduling and room availability, the successful candidate must be available:

  • Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:00am onwards
